Altındağ, Ankara
The Direksiyon building in Ankara Station, used by Atatürk as residence and headquarters during the War of Independence, and a railway museum.
Its story
The small stone building was built in 1892 for the railway administration during construction of the Baghdad Railway and was known as the 'Direksiyon building'. After arriving in Ankara, Mustafa Kemal Paşa used this building as both residence and workplace for about three years. On the upper floor, the reception, study and bedrooms are furnished with period items, while the ground floor has been turned into a museum on railway history. The building has been open to visitors since 1964. The historic railway car Atatürk used on his journeys is also displayed nearby.
