Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Altındağ, Ankara
An archaeology museum housed in the Mahmut Paşa Bedesten and Kurşunlu Han, presenting Anatolian civilizations in chronological order from the Paleolithic to the Ottomans.
Its story
The museum was founded in the early years of the Republic to display Hittite artifacts together, and it was set up in two Ottoman commercial buildings at the foot of Ankara Castle: the 15th-century Mahmut Paşa Bedesten and Kurşunlu Han. Çatalhöyük's wall paintings and mother goddess figurines, Hittite reliefs, Phrygian wooden objects and Urartian metalwork are the best-known parts of the collection. Large stone reliefs are displayed in the bedesten's domed central hall. The museum won the European Museum of the Year award in 1997. Located just below the castle, it is easily combined with tours of Kaleiçi and Hamamönü.
