Its story
Kösedağ is a massif rising alone northwest of the plain, about 20 km from the Eleşkirt district center; sources give the height of its summit as 3,433–3,445 meters. It is said to have taken its name (kose, 'beardless') from its treeless, bare and steep dome-shaped appearance. The easiest ascent of the mountain, which rises between the villages of Yukarıkopuz and Gözaydın, is the classic route along the ridge above Gözaydın village, about 14 km round trip; along the way, at 3,030 meters, there is a cairn that helps with navigation. Mountaineers choose the Kösedağ climb for acclimatization and training before Mount Ağrı. The summit offers a wide view of the Eleşkirt Plain and the surrounding ranges.
