Its story
This roughly 160-meter formation on the slopes of Mount Tendürek, between the villages of Üzengili and Telçeker, was noticed in an aerial photograph in 1959 and named after Captain İlhan Durupınar, who examined the photo. Because of its ship-like appearance, it was claimed to be the remains of Noah's Ark, and over the years the site became a focus of interest. However, most geologists state that the formation is a natural structure shaped by limonite and magnetite deposits in tilted sedimentary layers; the ark claim has not been scientifically proven and is disputed. The site is protected as a natural heritage site and open-air museum; there is a visitor information center nearby. Reached by road signs from Doğubayazıt, the site can be planned together with trips around the foot of Mount Ağrı.
